SGB Diversity Committee and BAS Political Action Committee to address diversity

April 4, 2008, 1:43 p.m.

PITTSBURGH, Pa., April 4, 2008 - The Student Government Board Diversity Committee and the Political Action Committee of the Black Action Society will be holding a briefing to discuss demographic data of tenured faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. The briefing, which takes place Wednesday 9 April 2008 at 5 pm in Dining Room A of the William Pitt Union, is open to faculty, staff, and students and will address the issue of diversity on campus. University departments that were found to have no tenured faculty of color or female faculty members were issued a "Zero Award" to acknowledge the situation at hand.

This event follows National Take Affirmative Action Day, which was cosponsored by the United States Student Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Youth and College Division, and the leadership conference on Civil Rights Education Fund‘s Student Activist Network on 1 April, 2008.

ABOUT STUDENT GOVERNMENT BOARD - The Student Government Board exists to provide undergraduate, non-CGS students with representation as a student voice to University administration. The SGB represents the needs, interests, and concerns of all Pitt students. Another important aspect of the SGB is allocation of the student activities fee, which provides money to over 350 student organizations at the University of Pittsburgh.

The board is comprised of one President and eight Board Members, all elected by the student body. The SGB also has ten standing committees who address various aspects of campus life, including diversity, freshman involvement, and governmental relations.
